Lesson Nine

"Followers of God"

Introduction:  We are admonished in the very first verse of chapter 5 of Ephesians to be "followers of God."  One might stop and ask themselves, exactly what does that mean.  How do I become a "follower of God?"  What is involved?  Jesus the Son of God was described by the writer of Hebrews as follows:  "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high" (Hebrews1:3), and the disciple Philip, who asked Jesus to "Show us the Father" was answered thusly:  "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip?  He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?"  (John 14:9).  Thus we are reminded once again that Jesus is God in the flesh, and, that He revealed the Father to us in His life. To "follow God" is to adhere to the instructions of Jesus, to emulate the life of Christ.  In short, to follow in the footsteps of Jesus in our lifestyles, attitudes, responses and reactions in life. That preaches easier than it lives, and, can only be lived by the enablement and empowerment of the Holy Spirit as we daily yield to Him.
